I have purchased several of the Res-Q-Me keychain escape tools for Christmas presents, but being cautious, decided to test the one I bought for myself. I took some old frames that had glass in them, set one of the glass pieces on the table, and applied the keychain device to the glass, using it just as they recommend. It worked and cracked the glass quite nicely. Not content with just one positive performance, but also having a little fun seeing how easily the glass broke with the spring mechanism, I decided to take another piece of glass, and test again. It worked again. Now, somewhere I read that there are about 12 springs in the life of this gadget, so, as much fun as I was having, I decided to stop at two tests, but as I give them out over the holidays, I will caution my family and friends to try their Res-Q-Me at home just as I did. You never know if there might be a defective one, but I can say that for the tool that I used, performance was excellent. I think it is a very good product and works as they advertise. Oh, they mention in the packaging not to use this on the front windshield, as there is laminate covering windshield to protect from flying glass. Just want to emphasize that point. Use on side windows only!

As a law enforcement office I have used this tool several times, in emergency situations, with no problems. It is compact, practical, and relatively easy to use. My daughter is learning to drive an I am purchasing one for her to have on her keys. I read the other review and I have not experienced the failure that they speak of. The window break feature is activated by user force. The user must place the tool on the window and steadily press down on the tool to activate the punch. It is spring loaded and is stiff. I would not recommend this for a elderly person or someone who lacks hand and arm strength as they simply may not have enough strength the activate the punch. But for an average person this is a nice little piece of mind to have on your keyring.....

Lucky Escapes From Terrorist Attacks

I have met many people over the last number of years in my business line of work, stammering tuition, and have heard a couple of remarkable stories of how they narrowly avoided a terrorist attack.

The first was a man who was in New York at the time of the attack on the twin towers. He and his friends from England had been in New York for around a week and were due to fly back home on September 11th. On the tenth of September they decided to go to the twin towers, firstly to have a look and secondly to take some photos from the top.

They had to wait a long time until it was their turn to purchase their tickets. The man who was serving behind the counter asked the a question:
"Are you here to take photographs lads, or just a general look around? If you are here to take photographs it might be worth waiting until tommorrow, as it is quite cloudy up there today. I can sell you the tickets today, so when you arrive tommorrow you do not have to wait etc."

They agreed this was a good idea and planned to return early in the morning.

"What shall we do now then"
said one of the group of lads.

They discussed the options and decided to go to a bar and to have a few drinks. A few drinks turned into a lot of drinks. In the morning they all slept in to recover from the alcohol and when they awoke they quickly heard the news.

Alcohol had possibly saved their lives.

I met another man who had been in Bali on the night of the terrorist attack there. He and his girlfriend had planned to meet another couple in one of the bars which was eventually bombed.

Earlier in the day the couple had phoned to cancel as one of them was ill. Another lucky escape!

I've found it handy to have this in the glove box, and would happily give it as a gift to family. While originally, this was an emergency only item, it is also a perfectly good back up flashlight and cutting edge. br /br /I was curious, and tried the pressurized tip, which was much more powerful than you'd expect in such a small item. It put a ding into hard wood on the first tap. I'd expect this to go through a side window in one tap, and a windshield in two or three. This doesn't require much hand strength, if you hand it to a young driver or older child, they will be able to break glass. I tried the blade, which cuts nicely through yarn or string. Most things you'd want to cut (aside from a seat belt or other cord) wouldn't fit, so this doesn't completely replace a knife or travel scissors.br /br /The light is what you'd expect, bright enough to read a map, or decide whether a tire is flat. Like most reviewers, I think the red light and noise aren't all that useful. Lastly, the key ring, which I don't use, but is quite suitable for a back up house key. I don't see a reason to use this on an every day key chain. It isn't necessary outside of the car, and it's a bit larger than a keychain swiss knife. Certainly, would be small enough to clip to a visor as a maplight (think geek does sell clips) but it takes up practically no space in the glove box.

Recently here in Atlanta some people were killed by flooding after 11 days of straight rain. One woman was swept away in her car. Nobody knows exactly what happened to her, but the thought occurs, did she have something like this and would she have lived if she did? Anyway, my girlfriend and I decided we needed something like this in case of emergency.br /br /I was really worried after reading so many reviews stating these didn't work. Soon as I got mine I began testing. Without having any spare car windows to test on, I began using cardboard. After no luck with a cardboard box I thought maybe it wasn't firm enough. I laid a piece of cardboard on the cement and pressed the Res-Q-Me into it. NOTHING! The little plunger seemed like it was going all the way in, but neither device would deploy. I was very upset at the prospect that these could fail when actually needed. You would think that a manufacturer of a device like this would put more emphasis on reliability.br /br /Then I tried on the side of my trashcan. It's the kind made out of hard green plastic that you roll out to the curb. Both Res-Q-Me's worked every time. They left a small little indention with each test and would reset for another firing. Although I'm not saying it explains every poor review, it is possible that at least some could be explained by similar testing methods as me with the cardboard... it just wasn't firm enough to cause deployment.br /br /Other thoughts:br /- It's small. I mean this in a good way. Will fit fine on your keychain.br /- My 110 lb girlfriend was able to press hard enough for it to deploy, although I'm sure it required more than 12 lbs of pressure.br /- Given what I wrote above, I highly doubt it would ever be possible for it to accidentally fire while inside your pocket.br /br /I hope to never be able to write how this works in an actual emergency, but for now I'm going to recommend it to others.

How to Escape a Sinking Car - With Or Without a Life Hammer

Some people wonder why I have a bright orange Life Hammer mounted on my console. Then I tell them my story and they understand.

One memorable night two years ago I accidentally drove my car into a river. I became trapped in my car immersed in water with no way out. My escape was nothing short of a miracle. The rear window that, just moments before would not budge, suddenly shorted out and went down on its own allowing me to escape.

Unfortunately most people are not so lucky.

There are, however, two things you can do to help ensure that you don't experience the terror of auto entrapment.

Learn what to do in the event you are involved in a water immersion accident.
Keep a Life Hammer in your car and know how to use it.

How To Escape A Sinking Car

In most instances once a car enters the water it will float for 30 seconds to a few minutes before sinking. If you stay calm and take action quickly you will greatly increase your chance of survival.

Do not attempt to open a car door. Even when the door is only partially immersed the water pressure exerted on the exterior of the door will make it almost impossible to open.

The key to survival is to GET OUT OF THE CAR AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. Here are the 5 steps to escape a sinking car:

1. Try to stay calm
2. Lower your car window(s)
3. Unfasten your seat belt
4. Exit through the window
5. Swim to safety

I cannot over emphasize the importance of getting out of the car quickly. I hear far too many tragic stories where people stay in their vehicle hoping it will float until help arrives. This is almost always a death sentence. It takes an emergency squad at least 20 minutes to arrive (usually longer) and the car will sink long before they get there.

But what if your windows and doors won't open?

Most people don't know that car windows are made of tempered glass and are extremely difficult to break. You can literally pound on a car window with a hammer without breaking it.

If you can find a sharp object like the edge of a screw driver and strike the corner of a side window hard enough it may break. However, it takes very little effort to break a car window with an emergency tool like the original Life Hammer. It has a conically shaped hardened steel tip that will easily shatter a tempered glass window.

To use a Life Hammer simply remove it from the mounting bracket, protect your eyes by covering them with one hand, then swing the Life Hammer against the corner of a side or rear car window. The window will shatter and you can use the LifeHammer to push any remaining glass out of the way.

The Last Resort

If you don't have a Life Hammer and you can't locate a sharp object there is one last resort. It is possible to open your car door under water once the interior is filled with water. This equalizes the pressure inside and out allowing the door to open.

To employ this method you must first make sure the door is unlocked well before the car is filled with water. Pulling the door handle two times in most cars will accomplish this. When the interior is almost full, take a deep breath, pull the handle and then push the door open.

How To Cut a Jammed Seat Belt

The Life Hammer also has a safely guarded blade built into it that will quickly slice through a jammed seat belt. Just hook the blade over the seat belt and pull hard to cut through.

Understanding how to escape a sinking car will help give you the composure needed to survive a water immersion accident. Life Hammer, that's what! I gave one to each of my family members for the holidays, and although it's very practicial, people were touched by the thoughtfulness given to this gift. i take this little Life Saver every where i go, i keep it in my saftey back pack along with my helmet, shin pads, knee and elbow pads, danger whistle, flash light, and emergency food supplies, I TAKE THIS STUFF EVERYWHERE. i mean every where, and the Life Hammer is a welcome addition to my saftey back pack. i use the helmet for walking down stairs; anything more than two stairs and you risk your pares. thats the rhyme i use to remember to where my helmet. i use the shin pads for crowded streets incase i get kicked in the shins by some clumsy person. people crumble like tins, so remember to pad up your shins. thats the rhyme for that. the knee and elbow pads i only use in conjunction with the helmet for stair cases over 10 steps. ALAS! i had to use the hammer just this winter. i was on a bus, dangerous i know, but it was cold and icey on the ground, and that was evern more dangerous, i had on my helmet, and all my pads, as i do every frosty day incase i fall somewhere. but when the bus got to the destination, terror unfolded, the bus doors would not open! the driver was perplexed, the old dears on the front seats were concearned, i was scared but had to be brave, i had to break the glass other wise we might all be trapped and starve to death or suffocate, and i only had enough emergency food for myself. so i used the Life Hammer, and the little thing saved the day. i felt like a hero. General opinion let not chafe, it ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS pays to play it safe. thats the rhyme i made up after the Life hammer saved the day. its a LIFE SAVER. it saved about 30 lives that day. YES!
