Polyphasic Sleep - Hope For a Longer Day?

Polyphasic sleep is not a new concept. Coined by psychologist J.S. Szymanski in the early 20th century, and evidenced to exist centuries before that, it is a method of maximizing REM sleep and waking life via several short naps throughout the day, as opposed to monophasic sleep, the standard cycle of 8-hour blocks each night, and biphasic sleep, a cycle of a long nap at nighttime and a "siesta" during the afternoon. By forcing the body to adapt to shorter rest periods, the brain is conditioned to more quickly enter REM sleep, the deepest, most restful state of sleep. This is done until one enters the REM state within minutes of unconsciousness, as opposed to hours for monophasic sleep. Specifically, the Uberman sleep cycle refers to a schedule of six twenty to thirty minute naps every four hours.

The pros of polyphasic sleep are many. After the initial 3-5 day shock period where the body and mind adjust, the benefits are said to roll in in droves; increased alertness and cognitive function, vivid dreams and increased occurrences of lucid dreams, a virtual cure-all for night terrors, nightmares, sleepwalking, etc., and of course, more free time.

It sounds too good to be true, but the jury is still out. There hasn't been a whole lot of research done on polyphasic sleep. Virtually the only tests out there have been done by amateurs submitting themselves as their own guinea pigs, and college students looking for more time to cram for finals. Even the committed feel the restraints of living a normal life - most workplaces don't sit well with napping employees. Buckminster Fuller, a proponent of polyphasic sleep, eventually had to quit the lifestyle due to business associates insistence on "sleeping like normal men."

Lifelong systematic napping is certainly unfamiliar territory, but the optimist might see it as an undiscovered psychological frontier. Who knows if polyphasic sleep is the answer to missing out on 1/3 of our lives, but if you're adventurous it may be worth a shot.

From the Runway to Your Closet - How to Wear the Latest in Men's Fashion

Ever year designers and other fashion minded folk flock to cities like Paris and Milan to share in runway madness. Beautiful bodies strut up and down the catwalk showing off what designers have worked so hard to put together. At home, while we sit in our casual wear we look to the trend setting fashion shows and ask "Who actually wears that?" The men and women that walk down the runway seem to be part of some awe inspiring vivid dream where people dawn the most ridiculous costumes. While you may not everything at the fashion shows on the street there are a few things that will make it out to your favorite clothing store. Here are a few of the outrageous fashions that you can take to daily life.

Hammer Pants

If you think Hammer pants were a nightmare left to the early nineties think again. Apparently these ultra baggy pants were just something to legit for designers to quit. Designers are bringing these.

How You Can Wear It

Though you may think hammer pants should be left to the late 80's, they are back in fashion and you can definitely pull them off. Stay away from the glitzy shiny pairs and go for ones that are a made from dark, no shine pair in black, brown, or gray, or dark blue and green. These colors make the hammer pants more acceptable and will look fashionable instead of outlandish.

Sheer

Want to be revealing without putting it out there? Sheer clothing isn't just for the ladies anymore. The runways were full of super thin tops to cover or barely cover the men that modeled them.

How You Can Wear It

Your biggest concern is probably looking less than manly in sheer attire, but with the proper clothing you can pull this off easily. Look for sheer sweaters in solid colors and wear them over button down shirts or T-shirts. This allows you to still take part in this sexy trend without looking ridiculous. If you're really daring try wearing a sheer top to the beach or poolside as a cover up until you hit the water.

The Zipper

In a strange attempt to bring back what I'm assuming is rock n roll attire designers have gone zipper happy. Whether its shirts, coats, pants or shorts there are zippers everywhere. It seems function is not at the heart of this fashion statement since there are zippers in places you can barely reach let alone use.

How You Can Wear It

Wearing zipper clad clothing can be a tricky feat. The key is to have enough zippers to rock the trend without having so many you stand out like a sore thumb caught in a zipper. While the zipper trend is seen in shirts, shorts, pants, and jackets, you may want to start with the jacket to test the waters.

Pajamas

Who wouldn't love to go to work donning pajama bottom and slippers? Thanks to the wacky minds of America's top fashion designers your dreams are now realized. Silk, flannel, and cotton pants have somehow worked their way out of the bedroom and on to the runway.

How You Can Wear It

The pajama look is a lot easier to pull off this spring than you would think. Stick with the semi casual pajama trends like cotton striped pants paired with a button down polo and you'll be comfortable and fashionable. Stay away from silk printed pairs or the I just rolled out of bed wrinkled look.

Cropped Pants

If only you had the fashion foresight to hold on to those high-waters when you mom told you you were to old to wear them. Cropped pants are all the rage for men this spring with hemlines making a movement upwards.

How You Can Wear It

The capri pants is probably the hardest trend for men to get past. It seems like that little bit of ankle and lower calf should be left to the ladies out. Look for Cropped Pants that rise a few inches above the ankle and stick to khaki like materials in neutral colors like tan, green, and brown. These are great for beach wear so pair them with a t-shirt and sandals.

Music and Your Workout

Music is a great way to energize the body through aerobic workout. If you love music and need to shed a few pounds, a music-fueled aerobic workout plan may be right for you. This is a common mentality; walk into any gym almost infallibly the sounds of the local radio will hit your ears. In addition to the enjoyment of listening to your favorite tunes, the benefits of adding music to your routine include motivation and increased focus. (A hurdle in the striving for a better body is that exercise is quite simply boring. Listening to your favorite tunes takes your focus off the exercise regimen and lets you escape from the monotony of repetitive movements. And with both your mind and body active, you'll achieve a fuller feeling of accomplishment. You can also increase your drive to exercise with simple conditioning: after repeated music-based workouts your brain will begin to associate the rigor of exercise with the enjoyment of good music. Simple, yet effective.

It's no secret that music and movement go together like peanut butter and jelly. A good tempo will infuse enthusiasm in your motions, leading to a more involved workout. A well designed music routine stimulates the heart, increases your blood flow and regulates and strengthens your breathing. Music is even said to have an effect on respiration, heart rate, strength and overall performance, though the link is still unclear. A 1952 study found that respiration rate increased at the onset of jazz music, and dropped to normal at the cessation of the music.

Researchers found in a 1977 study that heart rate loosely followed music tempo, gaining a small jump in response to fast music, and moderately declining in response to slow music. There has been surprisingly little research done into the subject of music and exercise, and the findings remain varied and unclear. (There is no one-size-fits-all regarding the best genre to listen to; basically, go with what you like. Choose something with a strong, upbeat tempo, ideally around 120 beats per minute(bpm). Dance music, including jazz, breakbeat and electronica, among many, many more, is always a favorite. Or you could purchase an aerobics album. Designed to maximize the benefits of a music-based workout, the songs often include warm-up and cool-down segments and perfect 32 counts.

Although the physical link between music and exercise performance remains unclear, the important thing is if it works for you. Adding music to a routine can be a fun way to rev up your drive to succeed.

Scared of Driving on Bridges Over Water?

Are you a person that gets frightened while driving on a bridge? I have a sister-in-law that is terrified of driving on bridges that go over water. She is terrified of getting trapped in her car with her seatbelt on and water pouring in. As a matter of fact, she was afraid of wearing her seatbelt too. Until recently, she made her kids wear their seat belts, but she never would. This is a person that made sure she rolled down her car windows whenever she drove on a bridge over water."Just in case", she would say, "Don't wanna get trapped".

The solution to all this has arrived. You can find an automobile emergency tool called Auto Life Hammer on the internet. The Auto Life Hammer is for anyone, including my sister-in-law, that have phobias of being trapped. Of course, you don't have to have phobias to include this versatile tool in your vehicle. The Auto Life Hammer is a 4-in-1 tool that has a pointed stainless steel hammer to shatter automobile windows. It also includes a handy, sharp recessed blade for cutting free from seat belts, a light that helps for reading maps, finding a door lock in the dark or it can even be used as an emergency signal. Lastly, the Auto Life Hammer includes a punch needle that enables you to pop automobile air bags. You can keep it in your glove compartment or mount it almost anywhere in your car.

My sister-in-law is also afraid of driving through tunnels, but I'm not going to go there, you get the picture...

  • The Original Life Hammer® (Orange)
  • - Double-tipped hammer with hardened steel points
  • - Protected blade to cut through jammed seatbelts
  • Res-Q-Me (Black)
  • - Compact lightweight -- carry it with you anywhere

Life Hammer Res-Q-Me Kit (Orange/Black) Description

Sometimes safety belts jam after a collision and power locks become disabled. Life Hammer is designed to break vehicle side windows and cut through jammed safety belts allowing you and your family to escape. Rigorously tested for reliability and quality and patented world-wide, the original Life Hammer has been approved by TüV and awarded the Silver Medal by the German Traffic Council. Next to the airbag and the safety belt, Life Hammer is the most important automotive safety tool that NO vehicle should be without. The Res-Q-Me is like a mini LifeHammer that fits on your keychain! Similar to the LifeHammer, the Res-Q-Me is designed to break vehicle side windows and cut through jammed seatbelts. The window breaker is a spring-loaded metal spike. When pressed against a side window the spring releases and the metal tip shatters the glass allowing you and your family to escape. The spike is automatically reset after use and can be reused many times. (Approximately 12 lbs. of force is required to release the spike.) The blade guard attaches to your keychain and protects against unintended use. When attached to your keychain the Res-Q-Me stays firmly in place, yet detaches easily with a sharp tug when necessary. To use the seat belt cutter, hook over the seat belt and pull. With both the Life Hammer and Res-Q-Me, you'll be prepared when in your own car or another's.
